Apple does not do direct mail-in for iMac repair. They require the iMac be carried into an Apple Authorized Service Provider. I expected to be able to mail-in the iMac just as I had mailed in Powerbooks and MacBook Pros before. We made three calls to Apple support and continued to get the same answer. According to Apple, the nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider is 97 miles from us. None of the agents could explain why the iMac could not be mailed.
Fortunately a new Service Provider had opened 40 miles away two weeks ago. Knowing this, kept my protests within reason with the agents. The last agent did sympathize and had someone call me later. That person, Dave, was probably a sales agent because he promised that if we bought extended AppleCare warranty, we would be eligible for in-house repair. I don't believe it. I don't believe they would send a repair technician on a 97 mile trip to repair our iMac. I don't believe it because the Apple warranty terms states that in house is only available within 50 miles of the Service Provider.
Enough of this rant. Just be aware, iMacs are not eligible for mail-in AppleCare.
