Pay Attention to iPhoto Export for Location Information

Always consciously choose the "Kind" and "Location Information" options when you export photos from Apple iPhoto 09 version 8.0 on Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6. Here are some facts and recommendations.

  • Dragging a photo from iPhoto to the desktop will not include Location Information.
  • Exporting with Kind set to Current will not include Location Information
  • Exporting with Kind set to Original will include Location Information if it was in the original photo.
  • Exporting with Kind set to JPEG and choosing Include Location Information does include it.
  • Read the iPhoto Help for export.
  • Do a few test exports and view Get Info from Preview on them to make sure you are getting the EXIF data you want.

  1. I've been experimenting with this and have come to the same conclusion as you. One additional point is: the JPEG export options are Low/Medium/High/Maximum.

The frustrating thing is that exporting as High quality creates JPEGs that are 1/2 the size of my iPhoto originals,

and exporting as Maximum creates JPEGs that are TWICE the size of my originals.

There doesn't seem to be an option to export in IDENTICAL quality but include the Location, Title, and Keyword metadata. Rats!
