pfSense IPv6 odd Configuration Sequence for Stateful DHCPv6 and Router Advertisement (RA)

Wed 21 Sep 19:39:36 EDT 2022

This is still confusing but this appears to be the situation.

Any change or save/apply to an Interface definition must be followed by a Save on the Router Advertisements (RA) Tab. If the Router Advertisement tab is not saved, the Interface tab save/apply creates a stateless configuration in at least one interface stanza in /var/etc/radvd.conf. Then a few seconds later, all stanzas in the radvd.conf file revert to stateless configuration. The save on the Router Advertisement tab rewrites the radvd.conf file with proper stateful configuration.

The particular configuration this has been observed on is two WAN interfaces and two LAN interfaces. One WAN is ATT fiber which will deliver /64 networks for the two LANs. The other WAN is a local fiber ISP with no IPv6. LAN1 network has an isc-dhcp-server running on a Raspbery Pi. DHCPv6 relay is configured on LAN2 directed at the LAN1 dhcp server. All dhcp servers, 4 and 6, are disabled in pfSense.

Service / DHCPv6 Server & RA / LAN1 /Router Advertisements
DHCPv6 Server → DHCPv6 Server → Unchecked (disabled)
Router Mode → Managed - RA Flags [managed, otherstateful],
        Prefix Flags [onlink, router]

This post will be updated with configuration details for Router Advertisements.
