BMW i3 Sour Cabin Air Filter Smell

BMW wants $200 to replace the cabin air filter in my 2017 i3. The maintenance program will replace the filter at a 2 year interval, meaning my next service in June 2019. The Air Conditioning blows out a sour smell when starting. (Our old Prius did the same thing) This began about a month ago. I passed on the $200 replacement. I hope the smell subsides. If it does not, I will probably try to replace it myself. I found the the filter at Amazon and installation instructions at Mann Filter. It will not be ease to replace.

Replacing the filter did not help.

I have run the heater at full heat several times with no recirculation and that seems to have dried it out. Remains to be seen if its a permanent fix. I also bought a Toyota Coil Cleaning kit that I might try to use.
