wview Weather Station Software for Mac OS X and La CROSSE WS-2317 -- it works

wview weather station software works great with Apple Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.5. The wview quick start guide for Macintiosh was easy to follow. Macports provides the dependancies for wview. Even radlib from macports works. Stick with the directions and build wview from source, don't try to install it from Macports. The Macports distribution does not install the needed environment of html templates. It would be nice if wview used Leopard's launchctl but the SystemStarter works fine.

The initial attempts with a Keyspan USA-19HS USB to Serial adapter did not work. Its not clear if there were Macports problems at the time or if wview just didn't work with the Keyspan. In any case a Sabrent SBT-USC6M was used successfully. The drivers included on the mini CD from Sabrent were obsolete and the Sabrent site did not have Mac drivers at all. Good PL2303 drivers were downloaded from the Prolific site, they worked fine. If you have already installed some other drivers, remove them per the readme from Prolific.

Be sure to stop wview when working on the weather station or bad readings will contaminate the wview data bases. Refer to a previous post about installing the La CROSSE WS-2317 weather station. Watch for a future post about creating iPhone display pages for wview.
